A comprehensive manual for automobile mechanics in the Enrollee Training Division of the Civilian Conservation Corps, illustrated throughout with technical drawings and charts. This is the revised and corrected edition, issued in May, 1939. The first edition was published in 1937.
The acting Division Chief, H. R. Kylie, notes in the Foreword that "[i]n preparing the text, every attempt was made to give the enrollee not only a manual of automotive equipment repair, but also to include enough of the basic principles of practical mechanics to enable him to adapt his skills and knowledge to other fields and to future developments in the automotive industry." Chapters include: "Making a Living in the Automotive Industry"; "Engines and Drive Units"; "Mechanics"; "Radiator Work and Metals"; "Engine Fuels and Carburetors"; and "Engine Tune-up & Salesmanship". An "Auto Mechanics Library" provides a bibliography at the end for further research.
OCLC locates three copies of this edition, at the Broward County Library, the National Agriculture Library, and the University of Texas at Arlington, and three copies of the first edition (two at UC Berkeley and one at the National Agriculture Library). A third, two-volume iteration of the manual, Auto Servicing Unit No. I and Auto Servicing Unit No. 2, was issued in 1941 by the U.S. Office of Education, Division of CCC Camp Education, and is held only by the National Library of Education.
