A record of work done by the Civil Works Administration in Bettendorf, Iowa, in 1934. The Civil Works Administration was a short-lived program created early on in the New Deal, lasting only from 1933-1934 and providing only manual labor jobs, primarily construction work, such as laying pipe for sewer systems, building bridges and playgrounds, etc.; over four million people found work through the program.

Included here are short descriptions of 12 projects completed by the CWA in Bettendorf, almost all illustrated with a photograph or multiple photographs, many of which show the men working as well as the project itself. The projects range from grading and quarrying streets, to building a levee, painting the Bettendorf Grade School, cleaning and repairing sewers, and even, somewhat remarkably -- given the purview of the CWA -- revising the city's maps to provide updated information about storm drains, sanitary sewers, water mains, and city property ownership.

Detailed documentation of CWA projects is uncommon, and we find no holdings for any Scott County, Iowa CWA records in OCLC.
