Brown cloth stamped in gilt to spine. Damp-staining to spine head and slightly to edges and corner of front board; cloth of spine head split and chipped, although binding is still strong; temoine to one leaf; two leaves roughly opened at top edge; many leaves unopened; light foxing. About Very Good.

First edition of James Pollard Espy's influential work on his convection theory of storms, inscribed by him to historian and statesman George Bancroft, presumably sometime between 1845-46, when Bancroft was serving as Secretary of the Navy and Espy was the meteorologist reporting to that department.
