SIGNED by Updike on the front endpaper, with a short notation in his hand reading, "There is more truth to be derived from error than from confusion"; dated June 3, 1924. As per the bookseller slip laid into Volume I, "Updike's own copy ... [p]urchased from Goodspeed's sale of Updike's Library", although we have not been able to independently verify this provenance.
