Photos a mix of color and b&w, mostly snapshots, some studio or otherwise more professionally done. Housed in a three-ring binder. Binder quite worn, with a split front hinge; light spotting/foxing to leaves and some edges of ephemera; most photos lightly affixed to leaves; uncaptioned and not chronologically organized. Good.

Photo album documenting the 1960s civil rights activism of Franklin W. Glover (1938-?), a teacher at Chaffey High School in Ontario, California, who, according to a statement quoted in a San Francisco newspaper was "a rabid believer in this integration thing." The photos and accompanying ephemera show that he was involved in community actions and organizing through the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in Pomona, California, in at least 1964; the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) in Neshoba, Mississippi, in 1965; and the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee in what appears to be Southern California, circa 1970.

Glover, who was white, became a teacher at Chaffey High in 1952, where he tought civics and speech. In 1960 he was awarded a General Electric Economics Fellowship for Secondary School Teachers of Social Studies for completing a course of study at Stanford over the summer. A laid-in newspaper clipping about the fellowship reveals that at the time he had a wife, Dorothy, and two children, Jan and Scott; personal images mixed in throughout the album show Scott surfing, Dorothy with the children, etc.

He seems to have became involved with CORE sometime around May 1964 (many of the photos have date stamps in the borders). The CORE photos include images of a bulletin board with CORE flyers, organizers in what may have been the CORE offices, and a protest march against segregation in Daly City, California, during the Republican National Convention. Glover was the leader of the RNC demonstrations, and was slightly injured during a protest at Cow Palace. Laid in CORE ephemera includes a flyer of rules for the march, and a ticket for a CORE-NAACP fundraising party at Carpenters' Hall in Pomona.

Another loose flyer "...now with your hand, pull the lever down" commemorating the deaths of Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney, who were brutally murdered during Freedom Summer in Mississippi in June 1964, suggests that Glover may have been spurred to greater involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in the South by the killings. A pasted-in license from the State of Mississippi Game and Fish Commission, dated 10/13/65 and listing Glover at an address in Edwards, Mississippi, suggests that he became registered to carry a firearm at that time, likely for self-defense rather than hunting; two other photos show Glover and a Black activist holding rifles, and the license is juxtaposed with a photo of a bombed or burned-down building. Another photo is of the sign of the COFO office in Neshuba, and another of the sign outside the offices of T. B. Kehman, Justice of the Peace. Many of these photos are of African Americans in their homes in Mississippi, groups of white and Black people seated outside, possibly at a picnic, and COFO-led meetings in the community.

Finally, a small grouping of five photographs are of UFW protests marching by the side of the road holding signs and flags, and of Glover wearing a poncho.

All in all, a remarkable and uncommon vernacular album tracing the efforts of a SoCal civil rights activists during the 1960s.

[Civil Rights Movement / Farm Workers' Movement / California].
