Nicola-McLaughlin points to Dominican Prime Minister Eugenia Charles, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and Mayor Ed Koch as examples of people oppressed in one aspect who are nevertheless “no friend” of other people like themselves: “Sisters and brothers, in 1984, the people of these United States called America and the peoples of the world are confronted with startling new contradictions.
