Panhandle Agora: A Consciousness Expedition to Be Held in the Panhandle East of Masonic.
[San Francisco]: [Haight Ashbury Happening House], 1967. 28 x 21.5 cm. Broadside. Pink paper printed in black. In remarkably clean and crisp condition. Fine.
Rare flyer for a Haight Ashbury event held on July 5, 1967, featuring a map of the proposed "agora" of thinkers and artists leading toward Open University, the "ultimate potential educational opportunity". Attendees are encouraged to "bring yourselves, your ideas, your serious quest for your ?s" to Haight Ashbury Happening House, at 11 AM.
Happening House was founded in March 1967 by Leonard Wolf and Allen Cohen, two professors from San Francisco State College who sought to bridge the gap "between the so-called 'straight generation' and the new 'turned on generation'" by providing free higher education to anyone curious enough to seek it out. The building also housed the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic, a crucial waystation for many of the hippies who flocked to San Francisco during the Summer of Love.
Possibly a Diggers-related item, printed by the Communications Company, based on the finding aid for the Haight Street Diggers Records at the California Historical Society. Not individually catalogued in OCLC.
