Dangerous and Troublesome Diseases. Which have thus far resisted the best directed treatment, can be completely cured by the Remedy Now Before Us. [Cover title].
New York: [Morgan & Allen], (n. d.). Circa 1875. 6" x 3-1/4". 32 pp. Blue wrappers printed in black, product text to inside wrappers. Faint tide mark to corner of front wrapper; light soiling and pencil scribbles to rear wrapper, with nick to top edge. Interior clean and crisp.
Promotional booklet for "Constitution Water," 40 drops of which when taken three times a day are proposed to cure "Inflammation of the Kidnes, Stone in the Bladder, Catarrh of the Bladder, Diabetes, Gravel, Brick Dust Deposit, [and] For Female Complaints a Specialty" (caption head, p 1). The booklet is largely devoted to testimonials for the medicine, interspersed with short paragraphs on the various diseases it is meant to treat.
Of note is the author's insistence that Constitution Water is "not a MINERAL WATER, but a preparation discovered by the Proprietor, who was formerly Assistant Physician to the Blackwells Island Hospital, N.Y.," and the ensuing potshots taken at mineral waters and water cures in the testimonials further seek to differentiate this water (steeped in scientific validity) from other, more expensive water treatments.
The only internal date we find is 1861, in a testimonial, but business directories suggest a date of at least 1875, based on the address printed on the wrappers.
Not in Atwater, and apparently rare. OCLC notes one holding, at Harvard.
