Alert! Increased Whale Kill! ... Act Now to Stop the Slaughter.
San Francisco: Greenpeace Foundation, Circa 1978. 11" x 8-1/2". Yellow mailer printed in black, with body of text to one side and address label and donation form to other side; folds into three panels for mailing. Additional fold line at center; staple holes; minor wear.
A mailer issued by Greenpeace Foundation of San Francisco during Greenpeace's signature first campaign against whaling, protesting the International Whaling Commission's decision in December 1977 to reinstate bowhead hunting and to raise the sperm whale kill quota from 763 to 6,444. "The sperm whale experiences life through the largest brain on the planet. Now it is relentlessly hunted by modern Ahabs intent upon their quest for lipstick, shoe polish, perfume and lubricating fluids... The whaling industry has wiped out one species after another while the IWC stood idly by. We must not allow this to happen to the remaining whales."
Whaling was finally banned by the IWC in 1982.
