Smoking by Women.

Regular price $125.00 $0.00

North Manchester, Indiana: Finnell Sales Service, (n. d.), circa 1940. 9-1/4 x 11 inches. Broadside. Stiff tan stock printed in black and red, with halftone illustration of Dr. Hugh S. Cummings and a small hole at the top for hanging. Light bumping to two corners; light vertical crease; small, faint stain to illustration and left margin. Good.

Anti-smoking broadside from what appears to have been a series of them: this is "Poster No. 8", and we note a differently numbered anti-tobacco poster from this publisher in auction records. Women smokers are the focus here, with the following quote by the former US Surgeon General Dr. Hugh S. Cummings encompassing the entirety of the poster:

"If American Women generally contract this habit as reports now indicate they are doing, the entire nation will suffer. The physical tone of the whole nation will be lowered. .... The habit harms a woman more than it does a man. The reaction is, therefore, more intense."

An interesting intersection of medicine, moralizing and sexism.
